Hexavalent Chromium: OSHA's New Regulations

What Is Hexavalent Chromium?

Hexavalent chromium (CrVI) is a powerful oxidizing agent, with widespread uses and sources of exposure. It is used in the production of corrosion-resistant iron, stainless steel, and in the pigments of many materials (paints, rubber, plastic, paper, lithography, photography, textiles, leather, stone, clay, cement, and metals). Many industrial operations generate CrVI, including welding/cutting on stainless steel and chrome plating....just to name a few.  It is also used in many chemical synthesis reactions, as a wood preservative, and for surface protection on automobile, aircraft, and metallic parts. At least 300,000 workers are believed to be exposed to CrVI in the workplace.

Why The Big Fuss Now?

On October 4, 2004, OSHA proposed rules with stringent new safety requirements and a much lower Permissible Exposure Limit. Under a court order, OSHA must issue final rules by January 18, 2006. Download the following PDF documents to learn about these changes and how they may impact your business.
